'Metamorphosis' mural takes flight at Champlain Centre

PLATTSBURGH | Champlain Centre is transforming its exterior walls into a vibrant canvas of color and community. In partnership with Outside Art, the centre will debut a large-scale mural, “Metamorphosis,” that celebrates the natural beauty of the Lake Champlain region and invites locals and visitors alike to engage with the art in a unique way.

Created by artists Amy Guglielmo, Giovanina Bucci and Abbie Duquette – alongside a team of artists and volunteers -- the mural, which spans two adjoining exterior walls in the mall’s Butterfly Pollinator Garden, features images of Lake Champlain, the center’s namesake, along with a “selfie wall” that includes butterfly wings created for social media mavens, families, children and even pets to pose with.

With this interactive element, Champlain Centre brings art to life as a community experience.

“We set out to create a design that truly reflects Champlain Centre and the community it serves,” said Ally Baker, the Marketing Coordinator at Champlain Centre.

“The name ‘Metamorphosis’ captures both the beauty of the butterfly garden and the mall’s ongoing commitment to being a hub where retail, culture and community come together to create lasting experiences for every visitor. It is vibrant, welcoming and interactive; it is everything we want Champlain Centre to continue to be.”

Outside Art, a driving force behind Plattsburgh’s public art initiative, brought their signature vision to this project.

“Outside Art is thrilled to have the opportunity to create a mural that brings joy and beauty to this space. Champlain Centre is the perfect venue to feature art that is vibrant and welcoming to visitors and locals alike. We are so excited and grateful for this colorful collaboration," said artist and founder of Outside Art Amy Guglielmo.

The Grand Unveiling will take place Saturday, Sept. 27, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11:30 a.m.

The free family-friendly event will include music, interactive community art projects and tabling hosted by Outside Art.

Town Supervisor Michael Cashman, representatives from the North Country Chamber of Commerce and other local leaders and organizations are expected to attend.
